What is Site Reliability Engineering at Ellevation?

We are looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join Ellevation’s technology team. In this role, you are responsible for the overall performance and reliability of Ellevation’s system infrastructure and products. 

Based on careful data collection and analysis, you will architect and implement the tools and processes required to ensure platform reliability and performance. You will define best practices and develop solutions that enable our Engineering team to continue to scale and provide the best level of service for our partners. Your work will help to ensure that thousands of educators serving millions of students can be most effective.

  • The role is an integral part of our product teams. No separate, “throw-it-over-the-wall” here. All engineers sit together with product managers and designers.

What are some examples of what a Site Reliability Engineer at Ellevation would do?

  • Identify opportunities for leveraging strategies such as load-balancer offloading, compression and browser caching;
  • Implement site and service reliability patterns;
  • Architect and automate our performance environment, including cloud server infrastructure, testing tools and scenarios, along with appropriate instrumentation and data collection;
  • Based on the key metrics that you define, develop predictive models identifying potential failure, capacity and bottleneck challenges;
  • Build the tooling required to automate the creation and extension of our cloud infrastructure, to be used by other team members.

You are expected to take on and own vital initiatives and duties for the company, spark and lead discussion, and help establish the company’s technical direction while providing timely and quality support and education across the organization. Candidates who have the following background and experiences are encouraged to apply:

  • At least 3-5 years’ of experience in SRE or a similar performance engineering role.
  • Comfortable at all layers of the network and application stack -- load-balancers, Microsoft IIS, HTTP/SSL.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages (Python, Powershell, etc.).
  • Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL platforms, including basic query writing, HA administration and deployment topologies.
  • Knack for identifying patterns and trends in log data using tools such as Splunk. Marked ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve complex systems.
  • Knowledge of continuous integration/deployment processes and tools in heterogeneous OS environment (Windows and Linux). Familiarity with public cloud platforms such as AWS. 
  • Experience with web developer tools such as jMeter, Fiddler, YSlow, PageSpeed, or Firebug.
  • Demonstrated success working in and promoting a rapidly changing, collaborative, and iterative product development environment, such as a software startup or early-stage company.
  • Passion for software and product quality, valuing clean and elegant, yet pragmatic and effective, software design. Deep interests in automation over operation.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and the mission; desire to focus talents on helping improve outcomes for others.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent degree.
